Recently, the Secretary of Education announced the proposed end to government funding of the Special Olympics program. This was soon reversed by the President and funding will continue for now.  From time to time, other charities that receive government funding are similarly  threatened to have taxpayer support ended.  As a result, it behooves all such charities to develop additional sources of support. The building up of endowment should be a priority. I have been involved in helping  grow several endowments from modest size to over 5X, 10X and more than 20X in three specific cases. I feel that the future will belong to those organizations that can grow their endowments to the point where their annual operating budgets can be supported by the income those endowments provide. That would free up the organization to concentrate on specific projects without the threat of closing the doors to the overall mission that they provide.
